Though beauty standards are always changing and evolving, there is often one particular ‘ideal’ that women feel pressured into conforming to. Whether it’s a slim waist or a thigh gap, the images people see on the covers of magazines or in ads can play a huge role in how they perceive themselves. However, there’s one model who’s trying to change that.
Barbara Ferreira, known commonly as Barbie, is a plus-sized model who’s working to expand the definition of what most people consider beautiful. Barbie is featured in Aerie’s new ad campaign #AerieReal, which aims to highlight beauty in all forms.

While Barbie recognizes that she looks a little different than most of the models working the runways, she has embraced her curves and seeks to encourage others to do the same. However, it’s not always easy, as the New York-based model explains that she’s sometimes the target of negative comments on social media.
‘I don’t pay attention to internet haters, but what really rustles my jimmies is when a girl will tag her friend and say I remind them of her and then she’ll get all offended like, ew am I that fat?!’ Barbie revealed during an interview with The Wild.

Despite the negativity, Barbie is focused on owning her image and loving the skin she’s in. ‘You think I’m fat? I’m still rocking it,’ she joked during an interview with The Wild.

Barbie also has an important message for any young women trying to follow in her footsteps: ‘There is nothing you can’t do because of your body
